Latest guide The Fingernail Test: When a Car Scratch Can't Be Buffed Out

Almost any PSI is safe to wash a car with. What decides whether you damage paint is how far the tip is from the car. For washing, we recommend a low PSI, high GPM pressure washer, because it rinses the car off faster.

PSI vs GPM: what the numbers mean

  • PSI (pounds per square inch) is the pressure, how hard the water hits.
  • GPM (gallons per minute) is the flow, how much water comes out.

The two trade off. A narrower nozzle raises the pressure and cuts the flow. For rinsing a car, it’s the volume of water that carries soap and dirt off the paint, which is why we’d rather have more GPM than more PSI.

What PSI is safe for car paint?

Most car-washing guides put the sweet spot at roughly 1,200 to 1,900 PSI. A stronger machine can still be used safely if you stand farther back and use a wide tip, since distance softens the spray more than the number on the box. Some guides do warn against going over about 2,500 PSI on paint, so if you’re buying a machine mainly for cars, there’s no reason to go big.

Distance and nozzle matter more than the rating

  • We would keep the tip at least 12 inches from the paint, and farther with a stronger machine.
  • We would use the 40-degree (white) or 25-degree (green) tip. Never use the 0-degree (red) tip on a car.
  • It is worth backing off around peeling paint, rock chips and loose trim, where the spray can lift an edge.

What GPM is good for washing a car?

Guides generally suggest somewhere around 1.4 to 2 GPM or more for car washing. More flow means a faster rinse, so if two machines are close on price, we would take the one with the higher GPM.

Pressure washer safety

  • Never point the wand at people, pets or your own hand. The spray can cut skin and force water under it.
  • Plug electric machines into a GFCI outlet and keep the connections out of standing water.
  • Only run gas machines outdoors. The exhaust contains carbon monoxide.

Overall

Overall, almost any pressure washer is safe to wash a car with if you keep your distance. Distance and the nozzle matter more than the PSI on the box: we would keep the tip at least 12 inches from the paint and use a 25- or 40-degree tip, never the 0-degree. For washing, we recommend a low PSI, high GPM machine, because more water rinses the car off faster.
